BONES
For me the best Bones episodes are the ones in the recurring storylines. Every Gravedigger episode makes my Top Ten. I find that with formula television shows, like Bones and Castle, where viewers know the mystery will be solved by the end of the hour and the angst and tension between the leads keeps each episode fresh, the idea of a change in this formula is appealing. There is something gripping about these episodes, and I think it has to do with the fact that anything can happen. Brennan and Hodgins getting kidnapped, Vincent Nigel- Murray dying, and the serial killer Gormongon’s apprentice being a squintern on the Jeffersonian crew. Bones has proved that they can break the formula and truly surprise the audience, and force bottled emotions and demonstrate relationship strengths of the characters in the process.
Bones has one of the best set of music moments on television. Starting with the scene where Max Brennan burns the FBI director as Placebo’s ‘Running Up That Hill’ plays in the background, or another favorite scene of mine, when Booth rushed to save Brennan in season 1 to the soundtrack of ‘A Pain That I’m Used’ To by Depeche Mode. And we can never forget, ‘Hot Blooded’. Bones’ creepiest antagonists to date are varied and different in many ways, but they all have one thing in common: the chill factor. The Gravedigger caused goosebumps before and after we realized who it was. Heather Taffet lived up to the frightening persona built by the creepy recorded voice and the devious suffocation schemes and surpassed it. Zach’s identity as Gormogon’s apprentice supplied the show with shock value, but also demonstrated that yes, the show was willing to go there. The cast wasn’t immune to the horrors they investigated.
‘The Crack in the Code’ offered up Bones’ latest mastermind, Christopher Pellant. A ‘hacktivist’ with a knack for manipulating technology, Pellant has the ability to tweak the system that the squints follow so closely. Evading capture in the midseason finale, he reappeared in the season finale, setting some of Bones’ most intense events into motion. With his prowess in the tech realm, Pellant piles up evidence that Brennan murdered her friend and loony bin patient, Ethan Sawyer. Angela stands by Brennan’s side, refusing to even consider the evidence and valid. Cam adopts a difficult role and remains objective, a stand that forces her to turn in evidence that could incriminate Brennan. I’ll admit, I was on Angela’s side and was a bit angry with her before Caroline pointed out it was her objectivity that kept the squinterns on the case while everyone else who might have been on Brennan’s side was kicked out.
A touching scene where baby Christine was christened was followed by Bones’ tearful admission of love, which alerted viewers to something that was about to happen. This did happen, when Max swooped in equipped with a getaway vehicle and an evasion plan. Booth runs up just in time to see Brennan driving away with his daughter. He turns on Max and declares that he WILL get his family back. The episode (and season) ends with a shot of Brennan driving off away from everything stable that she has known. How will Season 8 play out? Will Booth and the squinterns be able to apprehend Pellant without Bones’ help? Will Booth forgive Brennan for essentially kidnapping their daughter and escaping, even if it is possibly the only way?
get off the internet and open a fucking book
